Famine 30 DIY camp@Alor Star•••
Well, yea, first experience. I have been hearing about it from many friends and bingo! Someone told me it is going to be held here, yup! First in Alor Star! And, credits to my cousin, I got the opportunity to take part as a committee in the DIY camps. Well, kinda rush one. A few late nights meeting and there, we were there in the school, preparing for it ady.. Fuh... Quite a lot of volunteers including myself.
Wow. It was the second time I had a camp in Sin Min Private. The air-conditioned hall is big. We prepared till 2am the night before. Thankfully my house is just in the estate opposite the school, I had a good night at home compared to some other volunteers.
I was the assistant secretary and I was in charge of helping my cousin at the registration counters. Keep on repeating the same questions and doing the same actions. Well, quite a lot did not show up but the number of campers who showed up and registered on spot was a lot too.
I did not have the passion to go and mix with people there this time. I am not sure what was the resin. Perhaps I was too hungry or perhaps the other committees are a lot more elder than me... Hah.
To be frank, I knew I will enjoy myself more if I were not a committee. The game was energy consuming for me but considered fun. Kate and the others in her group had put great effort!! One more thing.. Well, the campers really impressed me, after so many hours of fasting, they still showed full enthusiasm and they were so energetic and supportive till the last moment!
I would like to talk about the talk given by two speakers. They were husband and wife. It started in a special way. Guess what!! Party rock anthem! Hah. The whole hall turned into a disco. Well, I am young and I got crazy too with the campers. :P followed by some other rock songs and karaoke session... Fuh yoh. On the spot, I knew the campers, many of them would fall asleep during the talk.. True.
However, I paid full attention during the talk. It was about gratitude. We watched a clip about an American visited some where in Africa. Day 1 Day 2 and onwards. The American accepted and understood at first but soon hunger and exhaustion caused him to be update and grumpy. It led us to think a lot. Everything is lacking over there... Water supply, food, electricity and so on. Without enough food to consume, they still have to do some energy consuming job like planting crops and so on. Poverty has killed many people there.
During his interview with a boy there, some of us felt like crying upon hearing the boys talk about his sister and her infant died of starvation years ago. The speaker said that people in our country, eating too much food after labour; but there, women died of hunger and so does the babies. Sigh.
One more thing, an old clip. Two fathers of a Philippine families, holding a big garbage bag of junk from fast food outlets, heading back home. The junk are the leftovers of customers. The leftovers, wasted parts of food, they are the only food for their families for the whole day. I recalled the day before I entered camp, the two pieces of nuggets I left on the table... And I looked at the excited faces on the kids.... My heart felt pain.
Ppl in rich country.. Obesity, high cholesterol... Wasting food, using high tech stuffs...Living luxurious life.. Complaining about the food they have..
Ppl there in poverty, struggling for food and water. They couldn't put much effort in looking for knowledge to improve their lives in future, they don't have the chance nor energy for that. Sigh..
However thankful to international organizations like world vision.. They have managed to raise awareness in public to offer help. There are volunteers who go there to teach the children there, help the adults to start business, teach the women there some skills in producing art craft and all. These help them to improve their standard of life. Some areas in some poor countries have been improved.
I have gained a lot through this camp. Though I did not know any new friends there, however, I had a better understanding about the situations there. I keep praying that one day, I will have the courage and motivation to be a part of the volunteers that service there, helping them to improve their lives, as well as helping them to know the good news about our Saviour.
Lastly, I am thankful to God for the opportunity for me to take part in this camp. It was really an enlightening one. :)
